Psychological Growth and Healing Through Ayahuasca: Insights from Our Study
Introduction
Ayahuasca, an ancient Amazonian psychedelic brew, is increasingly studied for its effects on personal growth and mental health. Many participants report profound transformation, reduced anxiety, and a deeper connection with themselves and the world. But how can these changes be measured?
This pilot study used the NETI (Non-dual Embodiment Thematic Inventory), a psychological assessment that evaluates key qualities such as:

Inner peace and mental calm
Connection with others and nature
Authenticity and spontaneity in relationships
Reduced fear and anxiety in daily life

The Study and Method
At Paojilhuasca, we are committed to offering not just profound ceremonial experiences, but measurable paths toward psychological healing. To better understand the impact of our retreats, we conducted a scientific observational study with 216 participants between 2022 and 2024.
Using a validated psychological tool (NETI), we measured emotional states before and after the retreats, and for some participants, several months later.
The Results Showed
Significant improvements in inner peace, emotional authenticity, acceptance of life experiences, and reduction of emotional defensiveness.
Large psychological growth across all participants, with benefits sustained over time.
Participants with prior challenges such as anxiety, depression, or trauma reported even greater healing outcomes.
Most gains remained stable during the months following the retreat, highlighting the long-term impact of deep ceremonial work.
This study confirms what we witness every day at Paojilhuasca: that when traditional Amazonian medicine is honoured in its purest form, it can open lasting pathways to transformation, healing, and integration.
We continue to support our guests not only during ceremonies but throughout their integration journey — because true healing is not a moment, but a process.

As Amazonian shamans say:
“Ayahuasca opens the door, but you must walk through it.”
